Afghanistan adopted an Islamic republic government after the Taliban lost power in 2001. The country is now governed primarily by Islamic laws. Several countries are ruled this way, including, Iran, Pakistan and Mauritania.
The defeat of the Taliban in 2001 did not stamp out the extremist group. The Taliban continues to threaten the republic government the country has tried hard to build.
