The probate court division of the Los Angeles Superior Court includes matters such as trust proceedings, minor's compromises and the handling of decedents' estates. The family law portion of the court handles divorce, legal separation, paternity cases, child support and child custody cases. Family law also handles elder abuse cases and civil harassment requests.
The criminal courts of the Los Angeles Superior Court handle cases of those who are alleged to have committed a criminal offense. Those offenses fall into three different categories: felonies, misdemeanors or infractions. The civil court division is for private individuals who wish to resolve disputes. A case is filed by a plaintiff against a defendant, and the court handles the case to its resolution.
The Los Angeles Superior Court also has an appellate division that handles the review of decisions handed down in the trial court level.
