Dick Durbin is the state's senior senator, and he serves as the minority whip. A member of the Democratic Party, Durbin worked as a lawyer before he began serving in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1983. In 1997, he took his seat in the Senate.
Mark Kirk worked as a staff member in the U.S. Congress, the World Bank and the State Department before he won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000. After serving five terms, he ran for and won a seat in the U.S. Senate in 2000. After suffering a debilitating stroke in 2012, Kirk returned to work in the Senate in 2013.
