When an unwanted call is received, document information including the date and time of the call, the length of the call and what the caller says. In some states, you're legally allowed to record the harassing calls, too. Provide the data to your phone company, and file a police report. The phone company can enable tracing and instruct you to dial *57 or another code whenever harassing calls are received. When you dial the code immediately after receiving a private call, the caller's number is forwarded to the police. The police can then forward the number to you. When possible, the police also provide the name and address of the caller.
