U.S. News and World Report ranks law firms based on client and lawyer evaluations, peer reviews and information provided by firms when they apply for inclusion on the list. To be eligible for ranking, a firm must employ at least one lawyer who's included on the best lawyer list at BestLawyers.com, explains U.S. News. Clients rate firms by civility, responsiveness, expertise, cost effectiveness and whether they would refer other clients. Lawyers evaluate each other based on similar criteria, but they also include information about whether they would refer their clients to a firm and whether they feel a firm is a worthy competitor. The list uses over five million peer reviews from an annual survey conducted by Best Lawyers.
Law firms provide U.S. News and World Report with general information about their lawyers and their particular strengths, as the site explains. The list combines all of the data and assigns firms to a tier, rather than ranking them in order. Firms with the highest scores are placed in tier one, then firms that score within a certain percentage of the first group are placed in tier two, and so on.Learn more about Law
