Texas Medicaid does not cover cosmetic dental care such as braces unless it is considered medically necessary by the dentist. In order to be considered medically necessary, the dental provider must recommend the treatment to prevent disease, dysfunction, infection or disfiguration, notes the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.
Texas has two Medicaid managed dental care plans, DentaQuest and MCNA Dental. Each plan covers routine basic dental care, including diagnostic exams, preventative cleanings and therapeutic services such as fillings, crowns, root canals and extractions as needed. Medicaid does not cover braces under either of these plans if the reason for braces is considered cosmetic, as explained by the DentaQuest and MCNA Dental websites.
