Navigate to the North Carolina Division of Employment Security homepage, and click either Claimant Services or Employer Services. If Claimant Services was chosen, a number of services are then offered. A prerequisite to obtaining unemployment benefits in North Carolina is registering for work on NCWorks, so click that link if registration is needed. Clicking on Apply for Unemployment Benefits/File A Claim starts the application process, which requires an acknowledgement that the applicant's private information will be accessed, and the applicant must then enter his Social Security number to proceed.

If a claimant does not have Internet access, general questions may be answered by calling the DES Customer Call Center at the phone number listed on the Contact DES Web page. New claims may be filed by calling DES at the telephone number listed on its Web page. Weekly certifications may be filed by phone at the toll-free number listed on the DES Web page.

As an employer, click on the Apply for an Employer Tax Account Number link, then click on Begin Application, to obtain an employer tax account number. Employers may also file or amend quarterly tax and wage reports by clicking on the appropriate link that prompts an employer to enter its user ID and a PIN number.
