Senator King announced in December 2014 that he supports the Housing for Homeless Students Act of 2014, which is aimed at preventing students at risk of becoming homeless from being forced to choose between quitting school or becoming homeless. Students do not currently qualify for subsidized housing for low-income people. The bill allows low-income students, many of whom are veterans, to qualify for subsidized housing while attending school.
In December 2013, Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown announced his support for the Homeless Veterans Protection Act, a bill that bolsters homeless prevention programs and provides transitional housing for homeless veterans. Senator Brown has also obtained federal funds to provide rental assistance to homeless veterans in his district.
New York Senators Charles Schumer and Kirstin Gillibrand obtained $190 million in federal funding to combat homelessness in their state. The funds were obtained through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Continuum of Care program.
