Coats served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1981 to 1989. Coats' first term as senator came about when he was appointed to replace Dan Quayle, who had given up the seat when he became vice president of the United States. Coats didn't run for senator in 1998, and Evan Bayh won his vacated seat. In between his terms in the senate, Coats was ambassador to Germany and a lobbyist. He ran again for the senate in 2010 and won.
