The safest city in the world is Melbourne, Australia, which received a 97.5 out of 100 city score from the Economist Intelligence Unit. These city scores are based on criteria such as safety, quality of life, cleanliness, culture and affordability.

The remaining top 10 safest cities are Auckland, New Zealand; Perth, Australia; Helsinki, Finland; Sydney, Australia; Adelaide, Australia; Calgary, Canada; Toronto, Canada; Vancouver, Canada; and Vienna, Austria. The safest cities in the United States are Honolulu, Hawaii, and San Francisco, Calif. Conversely, the most dangerous cities in the world are Detroit, Mich.; Cairo, Egypt; Harare, Zimbabwe; Lagos, Nigeria; Port Moresby, Papa New Guinea; Dhaka, Bangladesh; and Damascus, Syria.
