To report fraud to the IRS, go to the IRS website. Once there, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click Tax Fraud and Abuse, Tax Scams-How to Report Them and then How to Report Suspected Tax Fraud Activity. Determine the type of fraud, then download and fill out the appropriate form, states the IRS.
There are many different forms that an individual can fill out to report fraud to the IRS. If Social Security fraud for employment purposes or to file taxes is suspected, download form 14039, fill it out and mail it to the appropriate office, reports the IRS. An individual needs to include photocopies of one document to prove his identity. There are five other forms available that deal with false tax information, business tax fraud and a form to file a claim if a tax preparer altered any tax forms without consent.
If an individual prefers to do this over the phone, he may contact his local office, according to the IRS. The location and phone number of local offices are on the IRS website. If an individual suspects impersonation fraud, he may visit the treasury inspector general's website to report suspected identity theft. Before fraud is reported, be sure to have as much information as possible to aid in any investigation.
