Registering to volunteer is accomplished through the national program's website, by selecting the "Toy Drop-Offs" button, selecting the state, city and county, and typing in contact information. Businesses and organizations register as drop-off locations by following the same steps and filling out the required form about the business or organization. Families request toy donations by clicking the "Request Toys" button on the top of the page, selecting the state and nearest city and county, supplying contact information and filling out the pop-up form. The form requests information such as the address, ages and genders of the children. In addition, corporations register to be corporate donors through the website.

Toys For Tots is officially called "The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Program" and is run by the Commander of the Marine Forces Reserve and his staff. The collection and distribution of toys, however, takes place on a local level and is administered by local Marine Corp Reserve Units, Marine Corp League Detachments and community organizations in all 50 states.
