The 202 area code serves Washington, D.C., and as of 2015, remains its only area code. AT&T created the 202 area code as one of the original codes established in October 1947.
From 1947 to 1990, the 202 area code also served parts of Washington D.C. suburbs in Virginia and Maryland as an alternate area code. Though area code 202 later came to include only Washington, D.C., the city is expected to need an additional area code by 2017.
The 202 area code was the second Numbering Plan Area established. The first was the 201 area code in New Jersey. The North American Numbering Plan Administration, which serves 25 countries in North America and the Caribbean, regulates the assignment of area codes in those countries.
