What Is the Purpose of World Environment Day Slogans?

The purpose of World Environment Day slogans is to inspire the global community to take action to protect the environment by calling attention to the theme of the year. Every year, the United Nations Environment Program chooses a different aspect of environment protection to emphasize on World Environment Day.

In 1972, the United Nations General Assembly established the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, and it held the first World Environment Day in 1973. Every year, a different city hosts the event and holds an international exposition culminating on June 5. On World Environment Day, activities take place around the world, including planting trees, recycling, community clean-ups, parades, concerts and street rallies. These are all designed to raise awareness of environmental problems and inspire people to take an active role in helping to save the environment.

In 2013, the theme concerned food waste in affluent countries and the need to reduce the ecological impact of food consumption by making more informed choices. The host country was Mongolia, and the slogan was: "Think. Eat. Save. Reduce Your Footprint." In 2012, the theme emphasized the importance of a green economy. The host country was Brazil, and the slogan was: "Green Economy: Does It Include You?" In 2011, the theme addressed the health and sound management of forest ecosystems. The host city was New Delhi, India, and the slogan was: "Forests: Nature at Your Service."
