The purpose of the U.S. Army TRiPS program is to evaluate the risk of planned travel in a privately owned vehicle. It is a risk management system that requires an individual risk assessment and a dialogue with a supervisor prior to travel.
TRiPS, which stands for Travel Risk Planning System, is available as an online assessment or, if the online tool is unavailable, as a form. The assessment is designed to reinforce basic driving safety rules, such as wearing a seat belt and not driving drunk, and broader concepts such as scheduling a drive properly to avoid night driving and fatigue. Before travelling in a privately owned vehicle, soldiers must complete a TRiPS assessment, and there are potential line-of-duty-ramifications for failing to do so.
