Programs that connect inmates with pen pals include Meet-an-Inmate and WriteAPrisoner. These programs allow inmates to post profiles, along with contact information, so that interested pen pals can initiate contact with them.
Lost Vault recommends using a PO Box as the return address when writing to a prisoner. Since all mail to prisoners is opened and inspected, it is also recommended that the person sending the letter write the name of the prisoner at the top of each page of the letter. Additionally, include the return address the prisoner should write to in the letter as well as on the envelope.
