A private investigator’s badge is a form of identification used by private investigators. Much like a police officer needs to show their badge when interviewing people, the same applies to private investigators.
Private investigator associations in your state issue these badges. The badge may have a name on it, but cannot make the claim that the carrier is the police or any other official. Some states have differing laws regarding badges. For example, in California a private investigator may not carry or wear a badge in connection with an investigation, since it may mislead others to believe that they are a peace officer or other government official.
