The USDA requires that SNAP recipients pass income and resource tests, and the thresholds vary based on household size. Home equity, SSI, TANF, and most retirement and pension plans are exempt from testing. The USDA also allows certain deductions for dependent care, health care, shelter costs and child support, as well as a portion of a car's fair market value for cars used to travel to work.
