What Is a Police Oath?

According to the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the police oath is: "On my honor, I won't betray my badge, my integrity, my character or public trust. I'll have the courage to hold myself and others accountable for our actions. I'll uphold the constitution, community and agency I serve."

IACP notes that the oath is sworn at the time a police officer takes office. It is used to demonstrate and promote ethical standards, integrity and commitment on the part of law enforcement officers. The oath is often modified to include the officer's specific title, community and agency as necessary.
