Mount Sinai Hospital was founded in 1852 as Jews' Hospital, in order to ensure patients' access to kosher food, Jewish burial, and staff that could communicate in the German language of most new Jewish immigrants. It initially admitted only Jewish patients except in emergencies. During the Civil War, that policy changed in order to care for wounded soldiers, and soon after, the hospital's adopted its current name.
