What Are Some Personal Issues That Can Ruin a Political Campaign?

Personal issues that can ruin political campaigns include extramarital affairs, personal financial struggles, dishonesty and other various types of non-traditional behavior. Behavior not considered appropriate for an elected official is often brought up by a candidate's opponent as a way of questioning the candidate's character in a public setting.

If a candidate is shown to have a history of risky financial decisions or an unstable family life, their opponent is likely to key in on these issues and exploit them as personal issues that demonstrate the candidate will not be effective as a public servant. Other non-traditional behavior used by politicians or partisan groups to discredit their opponents includes behavior that is not religious or family-oriented.
