Web users can find an annual list of the 10 best small towns in the United States at Livability.com. For 2014, the site named Hailey, Idaho; Traverse City, Michigan; Heber City, Utah; Spearfish, South Dakota; and Glenwood Springs, Colorado, as the top five.
Livability.com rounds out the list with Port Angeles, Washington; Hood River, Oregon; Lebanon, New Hampshire; Northfield, Minnesota; and Los Alamos, New Mexico. In determining this list, Livability.com focuses on micropolitan areas with populations of fewer than 20,000 people and considers 41 statistics such as each town's cost of living, crime, racial and socioeconomic diversity, health-care spending and civic engagement. Statistics such as adult obesity, natural amenities and air quality also influence the results.
