To obtain a Social Security card, visit the Social Security Administration's website at SSA.gov to obtain an application form and determine what documents you will need, then take or mail the completed application and documents to your local Social Security office. Original, replacement and corrected cards are issued free of charge.
Click on the Numbers and Cards tab at the top left of the main page at SSA.gov, and then click on New or Replacement Social Security Number and Card from the drop-down menu. On the right side of the next page, click on Types of Cards to view a chart that describes the types of Social Security cards available and determine which one you will apply for.
Go back to the previous page, where the steps to obtain a card are presented midway down the page in three horizontal gray boxes containing links to more detailed information. To determine what documents you need to apply for a card, click on the first box. Click on the second box to fill out or print an application form. Click on the third box, and then enter your ZIP code to find the address of the local Social Security Administration office where you should take or mail the required documents.
