Full Answer

Despite a growing demand for India to do away with its caste system, it still plays a significant role in Indian society. Education is a particular area in which there is still a great divide between the castes. Students of higher castes have a much higher literacy rate and perform significantly better in school than their lower caste classmates. The divide also carries over into higher education. University statistics show a much higher admission rate of students of higher castes. Recent research suggests that the superior classroom performance of students of higher castes may be due to a natural inferiority complex of those of lower castes. Politicians in India face increasing dilemmas about how to deal with caste issues. In spite of the growing insistence for government assistance in leveling the castes, politicians continue to pass legislation that promotes the current system.
