The Navy Physical Readiness Test Instruction is an official document detailing the policies and standards for the Navy's Physical Readiness Program. As of 2014, the most recent Navy PRT Instruction, designated OPNAVINST 6110.1J, was issued in July 2011.
The Navy PRT Instruction clarifies the level of physical fitness that is necessary to ensure Navy personnel are ready for deployment and states that meeting minimum standards is a condition for continued service. To ensure compliance, a command can conduct PRTs as long as there is at least a four-month gap between assessments. The command must give notification of testing at least 10 weeks in advance. All personnel must be tested, except those given medical waivers, deployed troops and other personnel in special circumstances. To complete the PRT, participants do as many push-ups and curl-ups as they can in two minutes. Additionally, they do a cardio test consisting of a 1.5-mile run, a 500-yard swim or 12 minutes on an elliptical machine or stationary bike. The results are scored and added together, and the participant is given a rating of maximum, outstanding, excellent, good, satisfactory or failure. The test scores are adjusted to reflect ages and genders of the participants.
Those who fail the test have one chance to retake it. Failure to pass a Personal Fitness Assessment carries a number of penalties. For example, officers who fail a PFA cannot be promoted, and personnel who fail two PFAs in three years are refused overseas billeting and other assignments.
