Fleet Activities Sasebo is a result of a bi-lateral relationship between Japan and the United States. The mission of base operations is to provide logistic support to the expanded U.S. Seventh Fleet. It is also the home port of Service Force ships and mine sweeps.

As of 2015, the base houses Commander, Amphibious Squadron Eleven and the assigned ships U.S.S. Essex, U.S.S. Harpers Ferry, U.S.S. Denver and U.S.S. Guardian. The base is home to approximately 5,000 deployed American naval forces.
