A 2009 study by the Drexel University School of Public Health determined that the average cost for on-street, metered parking in most American cities was $1 per hour. The study focused on downtown public parking in 107 U.S. cities.
After surveying public parking agencies, Drexel University found that the average U.S. city's central business district parking meters allow for two-hour parking times on average. The study also looked at averages for off-street public parking garage prices, the cost of violations for expired meters and fines for other on-street parking violations. The study represents baseline data for future public transportation and parking policy studies.
