What Is the Motto of the Indian Navy?

The motto of the Indian Navy is transliterated into the Latin alphabet as "Shamno Varunah," which in English means "May Varuna be auspicious." Varuna, in Vedic scriptures, is referred to as the "Lord of Seas." In the Vedic verse from which the motto was drawn, Varuna is invoked alongside Mitra, the Sun god, and Aryama, the god of the Manes, for protection.

In English, the verse begins "May the Mitra, the Varuna and the Aryama be auspicious to us."

In the Rig Veda, which contains references to widespread commercial maritime activity, Varuna is described as being knowledgeable of sea routes.
