What Is a Motion of Extension of Time?

A motion for extension of time pertains to a formal request to a court asking for permission to extend the allowable time required to accomplish a particular action, states USLegal. The court generally grants an extension when good cause is provided.

The court may provide an extension of time on its own discretion or upon the request of a legal party before the scheduled time lapses. The requesting party is required to exhibit good cause or substantial grounds for the application of the motion. Under certain circumstances, the court may also grant an extension of time after the expiration of the permissible time needed to perform an act.

A motion for extension of time contains the date to be extended, the changed date requested, previous extensions granted. A statement in accordance with Rule 27 (a)(4) is also included, notes Cornell University Law School.
