March Air Reserve Base was established as Alessandro Flying Training Field in February 1918, making it one of the oldest airfields currently operated by the U.S. military. It was eventually named after 2nd Lieutenant Peyton C. March, Jr. Due to its geographical location, the base was a key training ground for World War II pilots involved in missions in the Pacific.

The U.S. Air Force Reserve's 452nd Air Mobility Wing is the host unit at March Air Reserve Base. The 452nd provides base support for 16 tenant units, including two from the California Air National Guard and several reserve units for the Army, Marine Corps and Navy.
