Laura Bush, first lady between 2001 and 2009, had between 18 and 24 staff members. According to a 2008 staff list published by the Washington Post, between 16 to 18 staffers worked directly for Bush. Other staffers did not work directly for her but participated on her office staff.
Bush's staff included schedulers, a speechwriter, a personal aide, communication and press secretaries and a chief of staff. The combined annual salary of her staff was $1.4 million; of the salaries, her chief of staff earned $172,200 annually. The remaining staff members earned between that and $41,800, the salary of the executive assistant to the first lady's chief of staff.
