The number of charities in the world exceeds 1,500,000 as of 2015. Millions of organizations around the world classify as tax-exempt charitable foundations. This large group breaks down into different organizations, including those delivering educational, religious and humanitarian services.
Charitable organizations fall into several categories. The largest is the group called public charities, which has over 1 million members. The smallest group is that of private organizations, which has just over 100,000 members. Lastly, over 300,000 organizations identify as "other" types. This category includes chambers of commerce, civic leagues and fraternal organizations. Of the different types of charities, religious establishments receive the most monetary contributions ﾗ just over 30 percent ﾗ while educational and human service organizations receive roughly 13 percent each.
