The North American Number Plan Administration gives regulatory authorities most of the power and control over their countries or areas. The NANPA is subject to directives from these same authorities. NANPA helps with what is called area code relief, which is what happens when a given area has the need for more numbers than the current area code can allow for and the NANPA has to help set up a new area for a portion of an already existing area. This can result in states having more area codes added, meaning New York may soon have more than 16 area codes.
