Navy boot camp lasts seven to nine weeks and is held at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center north of Chicago, Ill., near Lake Michigan's western shore. Training at boot camp includes swimming, conditioning, marching, drilling, weaponry and attending Navy classes.
After boot camp, the majority of enlisted sailors continue on with their training in "A" school while prospective Officers attend either Officer Development School or Officer Candidate School. Both schools are located in Rhode Island at the Naval Station Newport. Officer Development School is a five week program while Officer Candidate School is completed in 12 weeks. Officer Development School is for already-commissioned Officers and Officer Candidate School trains college graduates.
