From the date a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, application is received, applicants are sent a letter within 30 days with a decision, including benefit amount and benefit start date. Department of Children and Family Services SNAP applications are assessed against eligibility standards and require an interview.
The USDA Food and Nutrition Service, or FNS, oversees the SNAP application process on a national level, setting state standards for response times. FNS mandates that all eligible households are entitled to benefits within 30 days of applying, or seven days in special cases requiring expedited service. The verification, interview and review processes should be completed within this time period, regardless of the state in which the applicant resides.
