The libertarian porcupine is an unofficial mascot of the Libertarian Party of the United States. However, the logo is more often associated with the Free State Project, a political movement founded in 2001, because a version of the libertarian porcupine adorns the group's official flag.
The libertarian porcupine was designed by Kevin Breen in March 2006. Its main purpose is to provide the public with a simple mascot that can be associated with libertarian principles in the same way that the elephant represents the Republican Party and the donkey represents the Democratic Party.
The Free State Project is a political migration movement that started in 2001 and aimed to recruit at least 20,000 libertarians to move to New Hampshire in order to create a bastion for libertarian ideas in that state.
