When performing a search at the NPI registry website, users are given the option to select either a single provider or health care organization. The criteria required to perform the search includes at least one of the following: NPI number, provider's first name, provider's last name, practice address city, practice address state or practice address zip code.

Once the search is completed, the information displayed includes provider information, NPI information, business mailing address, business practice address, taxonomy and other provider identifiers that were listed by the provider.

The provider information includes the provider's full name, gender and whether they are a sole proprietor or not. NPI information includes NPI number, entity type, enumeration date, and the date of the last update made by the provider. The business mailing address and practice address fields include phone numbers and fax numbers on file for the provider. The taxonomy displays the practice type or specialty as well as the state the license number for the provider. Other identifiers can include Medicare and Medicaid licensing information.
