Businesses of all types are listed in toll-free telephone directories. At one time, only large corporations operating on a national level had toll-free numbers, but toll-free numbers are now available for businesses of all types and individuals as of 2016.
Toll-free numbers were originally sought by companies such as car rental agencies and hotel chains that operated in many states and wanted to provide customers an easy way to reach them. The breakup of AT&T and deregulation of the telephone industry made toll-free numbers more available and affordable. Additionally, the popularity of personal computing gave small and home-based businesses the ability to provide services to customers outside of their traditional geographic markets. Toll-free directories now feature business listings that range from small one- or two-person operations to the largest multinational corporations.
