Fort Sumter is located in South Carolina and at the time of the Civil War, was commanded by Major Robert Anderson, who ultimately lost the battle at Fort Sumter. The battle at Fort Sumter took place on April 12, 1861, and Anderson surrendered on April 13.
South Carolina seceded from the Union on December 20, 1860. When this happened, Robert Anderson and his troops were stationed near the mouth of Charleston Harbor, but Anderson know that if he stayed there, their lives were in danger. He took his troops to Fort Sumter, as a way to fortify the harbor. Unfortunately, he lost his stronghold only one month after he took his position at the fort.
