Online U.S. Census records provide information about family names, birth dates and locations, residency, marriages and occupations. The National Archives does not make Census information available online, but some companies have digitized past Census information to make it available for a fee.
Websites such as CensusRecords.com and Ancestry.com provide limited information from past Censuses online for free. Usually, this information does not exceed name, date of census, and state and county of residence at the time of the Census. For detailed information on immigration dates, family information, maiden names and marital status, a subscription must be purchased. Microfiche of past Census data can be viewed for free at the National Archives in Washington, D.C..
