The Hemlock Society was a national right-to-die organization that provided information on physician-assisted suicide to the terminally ill and the chronically pained. The organization was founded in 1980 by Derek Humphry. The Hemlock Society was a founding member organization of the World Federation of Right to Die Societies.
The Hemlock Society provided information to dying persons and their families without cost. It also supported legislation permitting physician-assisted suicide. In 2003, the Hemlock Society merged with another group into Compassion and Choices. Some members of the Hemlock Society branched off to form the Final Exit Network. Both organizations continue to educate the public and support legislation on physician-assisted suicide for the terminally ill.
