The headquarters for Interpol is located in Lyon, France. There are also seven regional offices throughout the world. In total, more than 190 countries are Interpol members.
Interpol was founded in 1914 in Monaco. The first headquarters for Interpol were established in 1923 in Vienna, Austria. Interpol all but disbanded during World War II when the Nazis took control of the organization. Following the war, however, Belgium took action to reform Interpol. It was not until 1971 that Interpol was recognized by the United Nations as an intergovernmental organization. The headquarters of the organization moved to Lyon, France in 1989.
