The head executive of a city government is called the mayor or city manager. In most cities of the United States, the mayor may oversee the different departments of a city, such as police, education, and transportation departments. However, a mayor's responsibilities can vary depending on the type of government structure that a city has.

There are different types of city government structures that include the council-weak mayor and council-strong mayor systems. In a council-weak mayor system, the council members can have legislative and executive power. In this system, the mayor's powers are very limited. In a council-strong mayor system, the mayor may have the power to hire staff members or department heads, as well as veto power.
