A Ghana romance scam is an act of online fraud in which a person who claims to live in Ghana expresses romantic interest in an attempt to receive money from the scam victim. The U.S. Embassy warns that these requests for money are almost always fraudulent.
Typically, the relationship begins online, with the supposed Ghanaian attempting to escalate the romance quickly with declarations of love and talk of marriage. The scammer then introduces some problem that requires financial help, such as a medical problem or the fees to acquire a visa. The scammer may promise repayment through an impending inheritance of gold or gems. Poor grammar and spelling at odds with the scammer’s supposed level of education and wealth usually characterize these communications.
