Fort Benning is located in what is called the "Tri-Community," made up of Columbus and Fort Benning in southwest Georgia and Phenix City in southeast Alabama. The base is part of Georgia's Chattahoochee County and Alabama's Russell County.
Established in 1918, the Army's Fort Benning is the site of the Army Infantry School. It is also the home base for the Third Brigade, the Third Infantry Division, the 36th Engineer Group, the Army Infantry Training Brigade and the Army Ranger School. As of 2015, approximately 33,000 active duty soldiers are assigned to Fort Benning, bringing with them about 54,000 family members.
