Bill Nelson began his political career in the Florida House of Representatives before moving on to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1979. While serving in Congress, Nelson served as the Payload Specialist on the Space Shuttle Columbia, becoming the second active member of U.S. Congress to fly in space. After an unsuccessful bid for Governor of Florida in 1990, Nelson was elected to the Senate in 2000, beginning service in 2001.

Marco Rubio served as Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives before becoming a junior U.S. Senator in 2011. The son of Cuban immigrants, Rubio is one of three Latinos serving in the Senate. In 2015, he announced a presidential campaign.
