Firefighters wear a complete outfit called personal protective equipment, or Bunker gear, which includes thick boots, long jacket, helmet and mask. Firefighters may wear special uniforms in certain conditions, such as when they are exposed to hazardous materials. These suits are complete with entire head coverings and oxygen tanks.
When working in the field, firefighters leave no parts of their bodies exposed. Full facial masks protect their eyes from debris and allow firefighters to breathe safe air. Their suits contain special fire-resistant fabrics to withstand high heat. When they are not in threatening conditions, firefighters wear casual outfits of black pants and either black or gray shirts. A baseball hat sometimes completes the outfit.
