The federal government sets strict requirements for opening a commercial alcohol distillery, explains the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. Potential distillery owners must maintain a separate distillation facility, document equipment and output, pay appropriate taxes and fees, and file an application, a bond and periodic reports.
It is legal to own a still, notes the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau. However, it is not legal to use stills for alcohol distillation without the proper permits.
