Originating as a social club in the 1780s, Tammany Hall slowly evolved into a giant political machine. It gained a great deal of its popularity through the work its members did with the poor. Members would regularly provide help to new arrivals to the country, especially those coming from Ireland. Because of this, Tammany became instrumental in the development of the city. Even though corruption spread throughout the organization because of leaders such as William "Boss" Tweed, Tammany continued to hold sway up until the 1930s and didn't actually dissolve until the 1960s.
