The Illinois State Police consists of uniformed and plainclothes officers who carry out law enforcement services such as highway patrol and criminal investigation, according to the ISP website. The ISP works in conjunction with federal and local law enforcement agencies throughout the state.
In performing its highway patrol duties, the Illinois State Police enforces the speed limit and traffic laws, conducts truck weight inspections, and oversees the safe transportation of hazardous materials, explains the ISP website. Agency detectives investigate crimes such as homicide, vehicle theft, fraud and forgery. The ISP also has specialty teams, such as K-9 units and Special Weapons and Tactics teams, that aid in emergencies and investigations involving narcotics trafficking, missing persons and hostage situations. Additionally, it provides air operations support to search for missing persons, recover fugitives and enforce traffic laws.
The ISP's Division of Forensic Services performs crime scene evidence collection and forensic laboratory analysis, according to the DFS webpage. It offers these services at no cost to other law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois. The DFS operates six laboratories that perform evidence testing in areas such as forensic biology and DNA, firearms and toolmarks, and toxicology and drug chemistry. Its Crime Scene Services Command assigns investigators to respond quickly to violent crimes throughout the state.
